Granules typically leave the dryer at 70\u201395 \u00b0C. Send them to storage like that and three things happen:<\/p><ul class=\"[li_&amp;]:mb-0 [li_&amp;]:mt-1 [li_&amp;]:gap-1 [&amp;:not(:last-child)_ul]:pb-1 [&amp;:not(:last-child)_ol]:pb-1 list-disc flex flex-col gap-1 pl-8 mb-3\" data-sourcepos=\"63:1-65:166;4105-4794\"><li class=\"font-claude-response-body whitespace-normal break-words pl-2\" data-sourcepos=\"63:1-63:248;4105-4352\"><strong>Caking.<\/strong> A hot pile cools slowly and unevenly. Moisture migrates toward the cold faces, salts dissolve and recrystallise at the contact points between granules, and solid bridges form. What went into the silo free-flowing comes out as a slab.<\/li><li class=\"font-claude-response-body whitespace-normal break-words pl-2\" data-sourcepos=\"64:1-64:276;4353-4628\"><strong>Moisture pick-up.<\/strong> The critical relative humidity (CRH) of fertilizer salts falls as temperature rises \u2014 and a mixed NPK grade has a far lower CRH than any of its components on their own. A hot granule will pull water out of ambient air that a cool granule would ignore.<\/li><li class=\"font-claude-response-body whitespace-normal break-words pl-2\" data-sourcepos=\"65:1-65:166;4629-4794\"><strong>Bag sweat.<\/strong> Hot product sealed in a PE bag drives moisture to the bag wall, where it condenses and runs back into the product.
